• Oxytetracycline is a tetracycline-type antibiotic that is most often prescribed to treat acne (spots) and rosacea.

  It's also used to treat certain bacterial infections, for example chest infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia and mycoplasma infections, mouth infections and some sexually-transmitted infections. Additionally, it is used to treat infections transmitted by ticks, lice, fleas and mites, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus group, Q fever and Coxiella endocarditis and tick fevers.

Pharmacology

• Mechanism of Action:
  Binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis and exerting bacteriostatic effects. Active against both gram-positive/negative bacteria and some atypical pathogens (e.g., Chlamydia, Rickettsia, Mycoplasma).
• Spectrum of Activity:
  • Gram-positive bacteria: Streptococci, Staphylococci (except MRSA), Clostridium.
  • Gram-negative bacteria: Haemophilus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella (limited sensitivity due to resistance).
  • Atypical pathogens: Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Rickettsia rickettsii.
  • Other: Actinomycetes, some protozoa (e.g., Plasmodium in combination therapy).

Indications

1. Infectious Diseases:
   • Respiratory Tract Infections: Atypical pneumonia (Mycoplasma, Chlamydia), tularemia.
   • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Acne vulgaris (oral therapy for severe cases), pyoderma.
   • Gastrointestinal Infections: Cholera, brucellosis (in combination with other antibiotics).
   • Sexually Transmitted Infections: Chlamydia, granuloma inguinale.
   • Rickettsial Infections: Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus.
2. Other Uses:
   • As an adjuvant in periodontitis (due to anti-collagenase effects).
