Artemether Injection is an antimalarial drug derived from artemisinin, used primarily for treating various types of malaria, especially drug-resistant falciparum malaria. It works by disrupting the membrane structure and mitochondrial function of plasmodia, rapidly killing intra-erythrocytic malaria parasites to control symptoms. Indicated for severe malaria (including cerebral malaria) and acute attacks of vivax and quartan malaria, it is administered via intramuscular injection, with a typical adult regimen of 160 mg on day 1 followed by 80 mg daily for 5-7 days (total 640 mg), and pediatric doses calculated by weight (3.2 mg/kg on day 1, then 1.6 mg/kg daily). Common side effects include mild dizziness, headache, or injection site pain, while rare risks include liver enzyme elevation or arrhythmias. Contraindicated in those allergic to artemisinin derivatives, it should be used cautiously in pregnant/lactating women and patients with hepatic/renal insufficiency. Always complete the full course, monitor liver function, and consider combination therapy (e.g., with primaquine) for radical cure. Store in a cool, dark place, and shake well before use.
